Palm Sunday
Sunday, March 29 at 8am and 10:15am | Saint Gabriel
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday where within the space of one service we turn from shouts of “Hosanna” to cries of “Crucify him!” At the 10:15 AM service, we gather by the playground for the blessing of the palms. We will then go in procession into the Nave.
Tenebrae
Tuesday, March 31 at 7pm | Saint Gabriel
The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” has been practiced by the church since medieval times. Once a service for the monastic community, Tenebrae later became an important part of the worship of the common folk during Holy Week. Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ’s passion, music portrays his pathos, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day.
Maundy Thursday
Thursday, april 2 at 7pm | Saint Gabriel
On Maundy Thursday we remember the words of Jesus during the Lord’s Supper – “Do this in remembrance of me.” We will hold a brief foot-washing service for those who would like to participate (to do so, please contact the church office in advance). At the close of the service the room darkens, and we strip the altar of all items.
Good Friday
Friday, april 3 at 7pm | Saint Gabriel
We commemorate and participate in Christ’s suffering and death on Good Friday because we believe they have a purpose: the salvation of the world. We believe that Christ’s death has conquered death, in all forms, once and for all: that is why we call the Friday on which he died “good.” When we find ourselves at the foot of the cross, Christ, who suffers with us, has sustained us. We meet Christ on the cross, and we know there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. (Romans 8)
Easter vigil
Saturday, april 4 at 7pm | Saint Gabriel
The First Service of Easter: from darkness to light! The Vigil begins with the kindling of a new fire – the light of Christ breaking into the darkness of our world. We make our way into the church following the Paschal candle while our cantor chants the Exsultet. We hear the story of salvation as told in sacred scripture, anticipating Jesus, the Light of the World. We catch a glimpse of how God has worked for our salvation since the beginning of time and how we still participate in God’s ongoing story of salvation. We participate in the baptism of those committing themselves to Christ and thereby renew our baptismal vows. Together we commit ourselves anew to be people of Christ’s resurrection. We celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter with joyful observance.
Easter morning
sunday, april 5 at 8am and 10:15am | Saint Gabriel
The Flowering of the Cross will take place all morning – please bring cut flowers to affix to the cross! With new joy and hope, we welcome the happy morning of Christ Jesus raised from among the dead. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! With the church decorated in flowered glory, we will participate with exuberant hymn singing, hear an encouraging message, and join in the exuberance of a children’s egg hunt. Easter Sunday is the day of our Lord’s resurrection and the first of the great fifty days of Easter. Easter season continues up to the celebration of Pentecost. These days are marked with joyful Easter acclamations and hymns. We highlight the importance of the resurrection over death and sin and celebrate our new life in Christ.
Stations of the cross
Fridays in Lent at 12pm | Saint Gabriel
Each Friday in Lent, we hold the Stations of the Cross, a devotional that allows us to reflect on Christ's Passion. The Stations are lay-led.
Evening compline
Tuesday and thursdays in lent | Saint Gabriel
Join with others as we pray an evening Compline via Zoom. On Tuesdays and Thursday evenings we will close the day with Compline, which is a brief 20 minute evening prayer liturgy found in the Book of Common Prayer. Reach out to the church office for the Zoom link.
Lenten Book group
Tuesdays in lent | Saint Gabriel
Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Life Together (1939) is a profound, practical exploration of Christian community as a gift of grace rather than a human achievement. Bonhoeffer emphasizes that spiritual community requires bearing one another's burdens, confession, and the, often difficult, daily commitment to living together in love.
We will meet over five Tuesdays beginning February 24, from 11:00 – 12:30 in the All Saints Room. Sessions led by Fr. Chris and Pastor Barb. Feel free to bring a bag lunch or snacks.
